Today's homework is Delilah Bun / Lauren Tate

· music

I vaguely recall Tate from Hands Off Gretel, but I had no idea she started performing solo as Delilah Bun. I keep getting surprised of these new young artists that come out of nowhere, but it’s always just me not paying attention.

The first song I heard from her solo work was Dead Men Don’t Rape and, obviously, I loved it. I find it hilarious in a you’re proving her point kind-of-way that men are upset. I need that song title on a t-shirt, but it’s hard to find a shop that actually supports Tate and doesn’t just rip off her song.

Dimmu Borgir - the all-male Norwegian black metal band - released a song called Dead Men Don’t Rape on their 2023 cover album Inspiratio Profanus, and they received very little backlash. It’s almost like there’s a reason beyond the song lyrics. I can’t quite put my finger on it.

So today I am listening to her albums Delilah Bon (2021) and Evil, Hate Filled Female (2024) in that order. It looks like she has a number of singles and EPs, I’ll need to catch up on afterwards.

So, let me start with the first thing that offends me: Not all her songs has lyrics available on Apple Music. It’s new music. It’s popular. These things should be available.

The second thing that offends me is nothing. Almost all the lyrics are about being left alone when she’s out with friends, or not wanting to be raped or calling out the powerful people currently killing minorities and women in the USA. I didn’t actually sit down and count, but most of the violence related words she sings seem to be her quoting men who send DMs.
